What style of Karate is taught?
At Kickarate we teach a hard, fast style of karate known as Shukokai. Shukokai is a style founded by the late Tani Sensei emphasising great speed and impact with a 50/50 use of hand and leg techniques. Shukokai is also based upon the modern combat principles developed by the late Kimura Sensei 8th Dan (Tani Sensei's senior student and Sensei Paul Mitchell's teacher). Although Shukokai incorporates modern combat principles it remains a very traditional style and is taught with all the traditional values and discipline associated with the martial arts.
Whilst Shukokai is ideally suited for combat conditions, great emphasis is placed on discipline and control, hence stuents can train without fear of injury through excessive contact.
Are the instructors qualified?
The instructors at Kickarate have undergone an intensive internal system of instructor training known as the Uchi Deshi program. Students wishing to participate in the Uchi Deshi program must undergo rigorous training over many years to qualify.
Will I have to train with Black Belts?
Not at Kickarate. At Kickarate there are specialised classes for novice, intermediate and senior students. During training you will work with other students at a similar skill level, enabling you to progress at a rate appropriate to your experience and eliminates the "thrown in the deep end" approach adopted by other schools.
Does Kickarate belong to an international association?
Yes we do. Kickarate is a proud member of Samurai Karate International who is a part of the Shukokai World Karate Association (SWKA). The SWKA is headed by Kawata Sensei 9th Dan Kaicho (Tani Sensei's most senior student).
